Executive Producer Michele Bauer and I are thrilled to launch Left Bauer Productions, the exciting culmination of a wonderful and rewarding collaboration. I first met Michele in 2011 at the beginning of my journey to bring the opera Harvey Milk to Australia. We immediately clicked over the idea, and while waiting for the right time and forum to present this great piece, began work producing another show, Playing Rock Hudson at the Cooper’s Malthouse Theatre.
With our company’s debut in mind, Michele and I saw Terrence McNally’s Master Class as the perfect opportunity to merge our operatic backgrounds with our vision for Left Bauer. In keeping with Rock, Master Class peers behind the image of a world famous icon – legendary opera singer Maria Callas – to reveal the scrutinies and sacrifices required to live a life in the spotlight. In the role of Callas, we are thrilled to be collaborating with the wonderful Maria Mercedes, whose passion for this project is truly inspiring.
Following on from Master Class, Left Bauer will present the Sydney premiere season of Playing Rock Hudson, and finally, an Australian premiere concert performance of Stewart Wallace and Michael Korie’s Harvey Milk. Presented in association with the Melbourne Gay and Lesbian Chorus, the synchronicity behind this production should make for a moving and memorable performance. Music Director Kathleen McGuire has already led tributes to Harvey by the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus for the 25th and 30th anniversary commemorations of his assassination, and 2015 marks the 20th anniversary of the opera’s American premiere and the 25th anniversary of the MGLC.
With thanks to everyone involved, we hope you enjoy these first offerings from Left Bauer Productions and are as excited by their stories as we are to be presenting them.
